Cleaning & Storing Herbs

Today I went out and picked some herbs to show you how to store them for later use. I may want to make herb scrambled eggs or  an herb omelet in the morning and my herbs will be ready. Yes, I have been known to go out in my PJ’s and pick herbs…ha ha.  You can store any herb this way. It’s also great to have them cleaned and ready to go when you take them picnicking or to a friends house. I have been asked numerous times to bring mint for Mojitos! No, problem I’ll bring the mint and they make the drinks! Yum!

Pick herbs, rinse and swish in water. Shake off excess water and lay on a damp paper towel. Put another damp paper towel on top, roll herbs and place in a plastic bag. Store in the refrigerator until needed. The paper towel should not be dripping wet, squeeze out excess water if too wet and then use. The herbs will last about a week.

Another option is; pick the herbs, do not rinse and put cut stem end in a glass of water. Stored in the refrigerator it will last many days. It also looks pretty on the counter, but may not last as long. Change water daily and rinse herbs before using. I have also done this when some cilantro started to wilt in the fridge. I re-cut the stems put them in water and the cilantro perked right back up!
